Take home folder
Each child will bring home a red take home folder every night.  This folder is a courier for information between home and school.   Inside the folder you will find important information from school and your child’s homework.  Homework papers will come home, as needed.  The expectation is that they will be returned completed the following day.  Homework should never be a chore but should be a continuation of the learning from the classroom that day.  Please let me know if your child is having difficulty completing the assigned homework.
Daily Behavior Log/ Reading Log
In order to inform you of your child’s behavior at school each day, there will be a Stop Light Behavior Log in your child’s folder each night.  Students will fill in a green, yellow, or red light on their sheet each afternoon before dismissal.  This will serve as a way to communicate with parents on a daily basis.   I will write comments about your child’s behavior in the space provided, if necessary.  Please sign and return this chart to your child’s red folder every night. This procedure will help us both to track your child’s behavior at school.

Reading Logs are a weekly calendar that is copied on the back of your child’s Daily Behavior Log.  The calendars are a place for you to document the books that your child has read each night.  The Reading Logs are collected at the end of each week.

Homework in first grade will consist of 4 daily assignments.  Each child must:

1.   Read for 15 minutes every school night

2.   Practice his/her assigned math facts each school night (assignments usually start in the 2nd Quarter)

3.   Practice his/her assigned spelling words each school night

4.   Complete Math homework, as assigned

**Additional assignments may be sent home periodically.

We will have a snack time in the morning each day while we complete our morning work.  Please send a small snack (fruit, veggie, pretzels, or crackers, etc) which can be eaten easily and without making a mess in our classroom.

Free Flow in First Grade
Throughout the school year your child will Free Flow to the Media Center.  Free Flow was designed to give each student the opportunity to check out a “Just right book” every single day.  First graders choose from a group of books in the Media Center that are labeled with a black, blue, red, yellow or green dot.   Every child will have the opportunity to Free Flow each day, as long as they have read and recorded his/her dot book on their reading log.  Free Flow is an easy way for your child to read a new book at his/her reading level each night!

Star of the week
Each child will have the opportunity to be "Star of the Week" once during this school year.  I will send home a note before your child’s special week.  Please send the completed materials back to school on or before Monday of your child's special week.  Thanks for helping your child shine!

Each child will have the chance to celebrate their birthday in my classroom.  If your child has a summer birthday, we will celebrate on his/her half birthday during the school year.

Book Orders
I will send home at least one book order each month.  Each order form will have a note attached that states the date the order is due.  Please make checks payable to "Scholastic Book Clubs".

School Lunch
School lunches can be purchased each day.  Please see the Palos East website concerning payment for hot lunch.

Car Riders
If your child has a change in his/her afterschool schedule, please send a written note.  Without a note, your child will follow his/her normal schedule.

Parent Volunteers
There are two ways to volunteer in my classroom.  The first way is to come in to our class at a scheduled time to do activities with the children and/or help me with projects.  The second way is to be an at home volunteer.  If you choose to be an at home volunteer, occasionally I will send small projects home with your child for you to complete.  Volunteers are very important in to my classroom and greatly appreciated!  If you would like to be a volunteer, please contact me.
