red folder.jpgTake-Home Folders:
Each night your child will bring home a Take-Home Folder. This folder will contain important information, hand-outs, notes, completed assignments, homework, and the weekly behavior chart.

One pocket will be labeled "Home" and the other pocket will be labeled "School" Please look through the contents of the folder and empty the "Home" pocket daily.

If your child has a change in his/her after school schedule, please send a written note explaining the change. Without a written note, your child will have to follow their normal schedule. I check the Take-Home Folders each morning for any important notes from home.

piano_thumb.jpgExpectations:
We follow the school-wide expectations to be Honest, Respectful, Responsible, and Compassionate.

Our classroom will follow a four step behavior system in order to track behavior on a daily basis. A weekly behavior chart will communicate how your child is doing at school each day. This chart will remain in the "School" pocket of their Take-Home Folder.

Different colored hot air balloons will represent behavior choices. Students will begin each day starting on a green hot air balloon. They will remain on green if they choose to follow the classroom expectations. Students have the opportunity to move up to a rainbow colored hot air balloon if they show exemplary behavior and will be awarded a small prize! Students may also move down to yellow if more than one reminder is needed to follow classroom expectations. A student will move to red if multiple reminders were needed throughout the day. There is space for me to leave comments if needed.

At the end of the school day your child will color in the hot air balloon icon one of the following colors:

Rainbow hot air balloon = above and beyond (small prize awarded!)
Green hot air balloon = ready to learn
Yellow
hot air balloon= time to think
Red
hot air balloon= time to talk (child moves away from the group, talked with teacher and/or principal, phone call home)

Please review your child's behavior daily.  Together we can encourage your child to make good choices!

 lunchbagrgb_thumb.jpgSnack and Lunch:
We will have a snack each morning.  Please send one nutritious snack in addition to your child's lunch.  Please note that all first grade classrooms are NUT FREE.  However, your child may bring a lunch that contains nuts.  Thank you for helping to provide a safe environment for all students in our classroom.

First graders have lunch every day from 11:50-12:30 (includes recess).  Palos 118 offers online payments for food service in the schools.  Each student receives a 4-digit code that will be used in the lunch line to access their account and pay for their food items.  Parents will be able to fund their child’s account and track what their student is ordering through the online module in their Skyward Parent Access portal.  Please visit http://www.palos118.org/index.aspx?NID=3273 for more information.

library-clipart-yToedaeqc.jpegLibrary Free Flow:
We will go to the library every Monday as a class. The library has an open door, "free flow" policy. Students may check out two new books once they have read and returned their books. They do not have to wait until our designated day.

scholastic_thumb.jpgScholastic Book Order:
Every month your child will bring home a Scholastic Book Order Form.  This is another great way to find “just right” reading books for your child at an inexpensive price.  Almost every month there are books to purchase for less than $2.00.  For every book you purchase your child’s teacher earns bonus points to purchase books for our classroom library.  If you would like to order books, please fill out the form completely and send either exact cash or check payable to: SCHOLASTIC BOOKS.  An online ordering option is also available.  The monthly flyers will contain information on how to order books online.

birthday-balloons-clip-art_thumb.pngBirthdays:
Our class is looking forward to celebrating your child’s birthday!  Summer birthdays are welcome to celebrate on their “half birthday.”  Your child will feel honored on their special day.  In order to honor the district’s wellness policy, please do not send a treat or gift of any kind.

volunteers-needed-color.gifParent Volunteers:
If you would like to volunteer, please contact me and I will arrange a scheduled time for you to come in and work one-on-one with students to help them practice skills we are learning at school.  Volunteers are very important to our classroom and are greatly appreciated!
