Welcome to 2nd Grade!
Ms. Van Dyke – Rm. 20
My name is Ms. April Van Dyke and I will be your child’s teacher for the 2016-2017 school year! This will be my seventeenth year teaching in District 118 at Palos West. I have enjoyed every year! I taught early childhood for one year, kindergarten for five years, and this will be my eleventh year in second grade. There is some beginning of the year information below and I look forward to sharing more at Curriculum Night on September 8th!
Home Folders and Assignment Notebooks
We will be having snack every morning. Please guide your child in choosing healthy snacks (ex. fruits, veggies, granola bars, fruit snacks, etc.). You may send your child with a water bottle to drink during snack time. Please do not send soda, juice boxes, etc.
We will begin Star Student the week of August 29th. I will randomly choose a student each week to be our “star”. We will be learning all about this student and she will have some special “jobs” in the classroom that week. I will send home a poster that should be completed with some guidance the weekend before she is the star student. The poster should be sent in on Monday and will be shared with the class. Thank you for your support in learning all about our friends!
Monday – Gym 1:15 - 1:55
Tuesday – Music 1:15 – 1:55
Wednesday – Art 1:15 - 1:55
Thursday – Gym 1:15 - 1:55
Friday – Gym 1:15 - 1:55
Students will “free-flow” as they need to check out books. The designated times to do this will be before snack and other transition times throughout the day.
I will be sending home a weekly newsletter every Monday to keep you informed about our second grade activities throughout the year. My newsletter will also be available on the school web page under staff, second grade, and Ms. Van Dyke. This may take a couple of weeks to be up and running so please refer to the paper copy until then.
I know that this will be a wonderful school year! The connection and consistency at home and school will support your child’s success. I am very excited to get to know all of my students and families!
I look forward to meeting all of you at Curriculum Night on September 8th!
