March Newsletter

With March here, can spring be very far behind?  Hope not!  We have been preparing for PARCC testing coming at the end of the month. The English/Language arts tests will be given on Wednesday through Friday, March 15th-17th.  The Math tests will be given on Monday, March 27th through Thursday, March 30th.  This practice helps to reinforce the third grade curriculum.  The practice tests in Mathematics and Reading give the students test taking strategies required in any standardized test they may take throughout their lifetime.  Please take a look at these when they come home.  The Reading practice incorporates all reading and writing skills taught at every grade level necessary to assure good readers.  In addition, the Wonders series prepares the students for trial questions in the PARCC test addressing the Core Curriculum.   Math sessions cover a wide variety of concepts.  By explaining their work, the students demonstrate and recognize a deeper understanding of these concepts.  It is clear to see the many benefits associated with the preparation and administration of these tests.  Please see the Palos West Newsletter and the letter from the 3rd grade teachers for suggestions to best prepare your child for the days ahead.

Students have been working on prewriting activities for their Young Author's stories.  They have begun their rough drafts.  Revisions will be made, and will go home to work on presentation.  Please see the instruction letter that will accompany their writing.

Some early information will be coming home later this month regarding Chicago/Illinois Projects.  The 3rd grade teachers like to have project choices decided before Spring Break to give families the opportunity to visit the site if they so wish. Students will choose several possible options from a list provided.  Specific instructions for the projects will go home some time after break.  Enjoy your child’s site if you are able to visit!

Looking to the future:  End of 3rd quarter, report cards, & SPRING?!
