Welcome to Mr. Mancilla’s Applied Technology webpage.  This is the 9th year for the Applied Technology program at South Middle School.  Applied Technology is a hands on approach to STEM education.  Prior to enriching students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, I taught 6th grade social studies South Middle School.  I am a 2000 graduate of Hobart High School in Hobart, Indiana, a 2004 graduate of Saint Xavier University in Chicago, and a 2007 graduate of National Louis University in Chicago.  As a middle school teacher, my main focus is on engaging the students with hands-on and high interest topics, where we are able to live and learn the curriculum.

This will also be our second year of running the Capstone program.  Capstone is a year long Project/Problem Based Learning program, where students will engage themselves in 21st Century learning and solve an authentic problem.  In small groups students will develop theories to solve a problem, research different solutions, and finally present a solution to the problem on our Capstone Day.  They will need to seek the help of outside profession experts and engage in in-depth research to these problems.

Besides just teaching Applied Technology, there are three very cool and interesting clubs that I help run here at Palos South.  6th grade after-school gym on Monday’s from 2:40 to 3:50, the Intramural Sports Program, and Cribbage and Board Games Club on select school days throughout the year from 2:40 to 3:45.  A signed Concussion Agreement Form needs to be turned in for Intramurals and After School Gym.  6th Grade after-school gym is open to all 6th graders and is a fun, social, and non-competitive gym club where 6th graders learn different games, and learn about each other.  The intramural sports program allows students to make their own teams and compete in Soccer and Basketball.  We keep records and have tournaments throughout the intramural sports program season.  It is open to all students!  Cribbage and Board Games Club is open to all South students where we learn, practice, and play Cribbage and many other board games in a social interactive environment.

We here at Palos South look forward to a great 2016-2017 School Year!!!
