Welcome! As we begin our educational journey together this school year, I would like to give you an overview of the Language Arts curriculum and my expectations of students. My goal is to expose students to a wealth of quality literature, to create life long readers and learners, and to encourage your child to discover what writing can do for him/her. As we work together as a team of parents, teachers, and students, I believe this will be a very successful year for all of us.
The curriculum will consist of the following:
-Poetry -Persuasive Language
-Drama -Public Speaking
-Non-Fiction -Vocabulary Development
-Historical Fiction -Reading Strategies
-Science Fiction -6+1 Writing Traits
-Biographies -Grammar Usage and Skills
-Styles of Writing -Listening Skills
As we align with the new state standards, there will be some changes in the English Language Arts content and instruction. Rather than focusing solely on the skills of reading and writing, the new standards highlight the growing complexity of the texts students must read to be ready for the demands of high school, college and careers. Therefore, there will be a much heavier emphasis on nonfiction reading selections. However, we will also read several novels and selections from the Prentice Hall Literature series.
Additionally, the new standards require students to respond and write citing multiple sources of text and media, i.e., using evidence from texts to present careful analyses, well-defended claims, and clear information. We will also work to perfect our grammar skills this year using the Houghton Mifflin, English 8 textbook.
General classroom procedures:
Grading is done through a point system that will be converted to a percent. The grade will be based on participation, tests, and quizzes, outside reading, assignments/homework and projects. In addition to teacher evaluation, students may have the opportunity for self-evaluation and peer evaluation. Each student will receive a midterm report each quarter. The grading scale used is the standard one:
A = 90-100 %
B = 80-89 %
C = 70-79 %
D = 69-60 %
F = 59 or below

The daily homework will appear on a board in the classroom. On average, I will assign fifteen to twenty minutes of homework every night.
Since helping your child learn and increase responsible behavior is an important objective this year, I am insisting that assignments be turned in when due.
If for some reason your child is unable to turn his/her daily home work in on time, I will accept it for full credit the next day only if the child brings in a written note from his/her parent. Without a note, daily homework will receive half credit the next day only and will not be accepted after that. If a major assignment (30 points or more) or project is late 10% will be deducted each school day it is late.
*If it is a problem with a printer, please remember that students have the option of emailing assignments to me to prevent the possibility of losing points.
Absentee work is the responsibility of the student. As stated in the school-wide assignment notebook: when a student is absent from school, he/she will be given the same number of days to make up daily assignments.

I have created the Infraction System to help reiterate my expectations and rules. Students will receive an Infraction slip if they do not follow the rules.
Infraction slips will be given for the following reasons:
After a student has received three Infraction slips, a lunch detention will be issued. Parents will be contacted if unacceptable behaviors do not improve.
